Bill Rogers: Representing Liberia in Sports
Liberian Athlete, Bill Rogers

In the world of sports, track and field is not a sport you hear about amongst Liberians. However, it seems to be putting Liberia on the world map these days. Bill Rogers, a Liberian Athlete based in the State of Texas , USA , recently represented Liberia in the 5000 meters race at the 35th IAAF World Cross Country Championship in Mombasa , Kenya .

In a race in which over 300 athletes were competing from different countries around the world, Bill Rogers managed to secure the 73rd rank amongst 345 other athletes from around the world. This was a remarkable world record for an athlete from West Africa .

Bill is not only representing the motherland in the land of sports but also in academics. He recently graduated from the El Paso Community College with an Associate Degree in Kinesiology . Unstoppable in his quest from obtaining a "sound mind in a sound body" , he is also currently pursuing his Bachelor Degree.

EducateLiberia recently had a phone interview with Mr. Rogers and here are excerpts from that conversation.

Excerpts from Phone Interview

EducateLiberia : Congratulations on you recent achievement in the IAAF Cross Country Championship. How do you feel representing Liberia?

Bill Rogers : I feel good representing Liberia because that is the motherland and sport is one of the many ways we can uplift Liberia especially since we just came out of war. However, I am disappointed in the way we are receiving no publicity. It seems to me that Liberians are only concerned with soccer or football as we call it. There are other sports right now that are promoting Liberia . I am not talking about myself but take for example, my sponsor and mother, Grace Dinkins. She represented Liberia before and broke the women 200 meters races and most Liberians are not even aware of that. When it comes to track and field, we think it belongs to the Kenyans or Ethiopians but there are so many talented Liberians who are wasted because nobody is willing help expose these talents.

EducateLiberia : We know how you feel and we must say you are right. This is the reason we have decided to help spread the news of your achievements to the Liberian community and perhaps they can start developing the interest in the sport of track and field. This brings us to our next question. What are your future plans?

Bill Rogers : As you know that I just graduated with my Associates degree, I am currently pursuing my Bachelors. I am also still training for any future competition that may come my way. It is always a privilege and joy for me to represent Liberia regardless. In regards to any future plans, I would like to build gymnasiums in Liberian schools to help expose track and field and other sports in Liberia . We are starting to receive some recognition thanks to Dr. Grace Dinkins and the others who have been promoting the sports. And thanks to you too for publishing this story on your website.

EducateLiberia : You are most welcome and thanks for taking the time to talk to us.
